The Berliner Stadtbibliothek in Berlin-Mitte has specialist natural sciences, medicine and economics collections, for example, and also looks after the Berlin Senate Library local government studies and law collections. The ZLB's Berlin and historic collections have their own dedicated reading rooms and offer extensive collections of materials that focus on Berlin's past and present.
Our offers at this branch
Study spaces. Computers. Wi-Fi
Besides reading desks and computers for catalogue research, the ZLB offers you various study spaces with technical equipment for your use. The use of this equipment is free of charge; you may need a library card to use some of this equipment. In the interest of all users, we ask you to please ensure that you do not damage this equipment in any way.
Workstations and microfiche spaces (only Berliner Stadtbibliothek) can be booked in advance: reservierung.zlb.de
At both branches, there are workstations that cannot be booked.
All other computer workstations and desks with technical equipment are freely available and do not have to be pre-booked.
The Federal State of Berlin public library regulations and fees and charges policy (BÖBB) applies.
You can also go online with your own laptop at the ZLB via Wi-Fi hotspots (wireless local area network hotspots). Access is free of charge and unlimited.
The computer workstations (Windows 10) offer:
- Internet (browsers: Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge)
- Microsoft Office 2016
- LibreOffice (formerly Open Office)
- Paint.NET (image editing software)
- PDF creation
- USB port for saving your work
- Online databases
- An external disk drive, which you can borrow from the service desk for use in the library on that day.
The computers may be used by anyone with a valid library card aged fourteen and over. Each individual session per computer is limited to one hour.
Central printing is possible from the computer workstations.
You should know how to use the usual applications if you want to use the computer workstations.
At the America Memorial Library (AGB), you can watch films in various formats and with different region codes in special viewing booths, and use our VHS digitisation booth.
The Berlin Public Library (BStB) also has a viewing booth.
Please note that, according to our regulations, all film media must always be borrowed before they can be watched - even if you watch them on the library premises
Listening facilities are available in the America Memorial Library's music area in the second media booth along the corridor leading to the piano room. You can play CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, audio tapes and records, and digitise them on a USB flash drive.
If you want to listen to DVD audio CDs and SACDs (Super Audio Compact Discs), you can use one of our film viewing booths. You must borrow all media beforehand.
All of the approx. 73,000 records we own are kept at the Berlin Public Library's repository in Breite Strasse in Berlin-Mitte; you can borrow 57,000 of these. Once you have found the respective signature in the music IPA, you can trigger an order in the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) and borrow or listen to the records that are available for loan on the same day at the Berlin Public Library, or the next days at the America Memorial Library. In the media booths, you can event save music from records onto your own USB flash drive.
At the Berlin Public Library, you will also find a record player in the computer workstation area behind the information desk. You can not only listen to records there but also save data to a USB flash drive.
You will find a screen reader at both ZLB locations. They are suitable for people with limited or very poor eyesight. These places are reserved for users with the respective impairment and may not be used by people without these impairments at any time.
