The ZLB is presenting itself in Sign Language

Welcome! We are pleased that you are interested in the Central and Regional Library Berlin (ZLB). The ZLB is the largest public library in Germany. It is one of the most frequently visited cultural and educational institutions in Berlin. There are as many as 3.4 million media available at our two sites.

In the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (America Memorial Library) in Kreuzberg you’ll find humanities subjects and "fine" arts, fiction, films, music, and the "Artothek" art lending library. This site is also home to the children’s and young adults' library, where you’ll find the Berliner Lernzentrum (Berlin Learning Centre).

The Berliner Stadtbibliothek (Berlin City Library) in Mitte carries subjects such as sciences, medicine, and economics. This site is also home to the Senatsbibliothek Berlin (Senate Library Berlin), which carries municipal sciences and law. The Berlin Studies and Historical Collections at the ZLB offer an extensive selection of books and documents on both the history of Berlin and the present-day city and have their own reading rooms.

As the Berlin regional library, it is our task to collect all printed materials, data, and recordings published in Berlin, as well as the official publications of the State of Berlin.

We would be happy to answer any questions you have about our collections and about ZLB online and look forward to your visit.

The series of events entitled "LeseZeichen: Kinderliteratur mit den Augen hören"

Ein Mädchen während der Veranstaltung Lesezeichen.

The series of events entitled "LeseZeichen: Kinderliteratur mit den Augen hören" ("BookMark: hearing children’s literature with your eyes") was organised in collaboration with the ZLB’s children’s and young adult’s library, Gehörlosenverband Berlin e.V. (Association for the Deaf Berlin), and Berliner Elternverein Hörgeschädigter e.V. (Berlin Parents' Association for the Hearing-Impaired) in order to promote reading support for deaf children. The event is held every month and is the only library event of its kind in Germany.
On the fourth Wednesday of every month, deaf parents and their children, or other adults such as individual case support workers and deaf or hearing-impaired children, are invited to the library, where picture books on a topic are presented in sign language. Both the range of topics and the selection of picture books are diverse: family relationships, children’s fears, love of animals, individual countries, occupations, scary stories, fairy tales, and so on. A puppet or shadow theatre show based on a book is also put on once a year with a sign language interpreter.

After the performance, all visitors to the event have the opportunity to get to know the library and find books or CD ROMs for learning sign language, stories with accompanying signs, etc. Anyone who is interested can register and borrow media with the help of professionals.
