Centre for deposit copies

As a regional library, the Berlin Central & Regional Library (ZLB) is responsible for collecting and archiving publications from and about Berlin, and making these available to the public, as a testimony to the region’s intellectual and cultural achievements.

For this purpose, the Legal deposits act stipulates that two weeks after the release of a piece of work published in Berlin, every publishing house must deliver a deposit copy of it free of charge to the ZLB. This applies not only to commercial book publications, but also to literature and documents by institutional and private self-publishers, insofar as these texts are intended for the general public.

Media governed by the legal-deposit regulations include:

Printed work (including newspapers, periodicals, notes and geographic maps)

Electronic data carriers

Audiovisual media on CD, DVD and other carriers

The depositing of official publications by the authorities and public institutions of the Federal State of Berlin and its districts to the Senatsbibliothek Berlin (Berlin Senate Library) is governed by a separate ordinance to ensure said publications are adequately and comprehensively represented on the ZLB’s shelves.

Some publishers are not aware of this deposit duty. If we find we are missing publications, we will get in touch with the publisher. We also welcome information on recent works published in Berlin which we do not have in our stock.

NB: Please only send parcels to the street address!
